Meningitis is either a viral, bacteria, fungal, or parasitic infection of the protective layers of the brain and spinal cord (the meninges). Meningitis is a contagious airborne disease. It can be a serious health issue if not well attended to, which can result in permanent brain damage. Meningitis affects everyone, both male and female, but is commonly seen in babies, children under five, older children, teenagers, young adults and anyone who has not/never been vaccinated on meningitis.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
There are diverse signs and symptoms of Meningitis. They include but not limited to:
  • High temperature (38 degrees Celsius)
  • Severe Headache
  • Photophobia
  • Seizures
  • Lethargic - Fatigue
  • Stiff neck
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Confusion
  • vomiting

MODE OF CONTACT
Meningitis is usually contacted from people who carry the viruses and bacteria in the nose or throat, but may not be ill. It spreads when you come in contact with an infected person. The infection can be transmitted via:
  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Poor personal hygiene
  • Sharing of personal belongings

DIAGNOSIS
Meningitis can be diagnosed based on a medical history, physical examinations, laboratory investigations, X-rays and scans.

TREATMENT
The treatment depends on the type of Meningitis present:
  • Bacteria Meningitis must be treated immediately with intravenous antibiotics and, more recently, corticosteroids.
  • Viral Meningitis cannot be cured by antibiotics, they in most cases improve on their own in several weeks. Treatment of mild cases of viral meningitis usually includes: bed rest, plenty fluids, pain medications to help reduce fever and relieve body aches.

PREVENTION
  • The first step to prevention is education. Knowing and being aware of the causes, symptoms, and risk factors can help you avoid the infection.
  • Get vaccinated.

COMPLICATIONS
If not properly managed can lead to:
  • Hearing loss
  • Visual loss
  • Paralysis
  • Seizure/Stroke
  • Permanent brain damage
  • Death
