HIV/AIDS: The Other Pandemic

December 1 is World AIDS Day, a day to unite in the fight to end the HIV epidemic, support people living with HIV, and honor those who have lost their life. The theme for 2020 is “Ending the HIV/AIDS Epidemic: Resilience and Impact”

Did you know that about 38million people worldwide were living in HIV in 2019 of which about 1.7million of them were newly infected in that same year and 690,000 people died of HIV related causes. Currently in Africa, there are about 25.7million people living in HIV & AIDS.

For such a big deal, we don't talk about HIV as much as we used to anymore!!!

The world seems distracted with other equally deadly pandemics. Truth is HIV is real and it is still out there lurking around in people living their everyday lives like you and I.

Today presents yet another opportunity to remind us all that there are medications that prevent transmission for those who are already infected. And for those who are not infected, these preventive tips cannot be overemphasized.
  1. Use condoms, just because people living with HIV don't look sick in anyway.
  2. Be monogamous, stick to one partner to prevent the risk and if monogamy isn't your thing, ensure to practice safe sex and limit the number of sexual partners.
  3. Don't abuse alcohol or drugs. Never ever share needles or any form of sharp objects. Avoid fights, situations or places that expose you to bloody violence.
  4. Get tested regularly!
Well, we sure know that with a vaccine or a permanent cure, HIV/AIDS will be a thing of the past. But for now, our best bet is to heed to these tips and stay safe.
